This initiative aimed at combating racial discrimination by:
developing a clear understanding of the situation of ethnic minorities and housing; and empowering respective stakeholders to prevent or combat discrimination in this area;
empowering the African minority to get their voice heard, to advocate for their rights and to report discrimination; and
raising awareness on racial discrimination and promoting cultural diversity.
Research:
Research on Immigrant and ethnic minority groups and housing and accommodation was carried out. This qualitative study delved into the housing experiences of immigrants and ethnic minorities and the concerns of property owners and / or their representatives in this regard. A training programme for property owners and their representatives was then developed based on the results which emerged from this research.
Two information leaflets on housing and accommodation were developed based on the results of this research. A leaflet targeted at property owners and their representatives incorporated information on the relevant legislation as well as related rights and obligations. Another leaflet was targeted at immigrants and ethnic minorities and included information on the rights and obligations of tenants.
Training:
Training held for the African minority tackled issues such as lobbying and advocacy, empowerment, rights and remedies, getting one’s voice heard and reporting perceived discrimination.
